Abstract

Objective: Aim of this study was to explore children’s view of health. Methods: A qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with children and their parents was performed. Children aged 8-18 years, either chronically diseased or non-diseased, were included, as was one of their parents. The interviews were coded and subsequently analysed according to a method based on the Grounded Theory Approach. Results: 118 interviews were conducted. A sub analysis of a group of children aged 12-18 years old showed two different perspectives of health: health as the absence of disease and health as feeling good. From the first perspective not being sick is the most important factor of health, whereas in the second view it is the way one experiences his own health, irrespective of the presence of disease. Related topics were eating healthy and exercising; normal functioning of the body and being physically able to do what you want; mentally feeling good; having friends and being able to participate; having a good social- and healthy living environment and being able to be yourself. Conclusion: Children’s perception of health is living healthy, not being sick and feeling good. The overall view of health is being normal and being able to participate in desired activities.
