Abstract

Background: In the Netherlands sport participation among adolescents declines from 88% at the age of 14 years, till 79% at the age of 17 years. A lot of research has been done in the area of sport participation; qualitative studies and quantitative studies, which both highlight the personal characteristics with the factors goal orientation, enjoyment, priorities and psychological health. This study investigates whether there is a relation between the factors of personal characteristics and sport participation, and which factor of personal characteristics has the strongest relation with sport participation. Methods: A questionnaire has been filled in by 1057 school pupils (1482 distributed, response rate 71,3%) between 12 and 17 years old. The questionnaire consisted of the factors of personal characteristics. A logistic regression showed which factor had the strongest relation with sport participation. The components age, gender, ethnicity and education level have also been included in the analysis. Results: Independent T tests showed the existing differences between participants in sport (PS) and non participants in sport (NPS) with regard to task and ego orientation, enjoyment, liking daily activities and sport, importance of daily activities and sport, and psychological health. The components age, gender, ethnicity, and education level showed also differences between PS and NPS with regard to the factors. The logistic regression showed significant results for the variables enjoyment, liking daily activities and sport, gender, and age (16-17 year) which indicates whether someone is a participant in sport (PS). No interactions between the factors and the components age, gender, ethnicity or education level have been found. Conclusion: Differences exist between participants in sport and non participants in sport with regard to the factors of the four factors of personal characteristics. The factors enjoyment and the importance of daily activities and sport, and the components age and gender have been shown as indicators of sport participation.
