Abstract
Within this scientific internship, research is done into the functioning of the QLF-pen, a (hand) tool based on the QLF-technique. The QLF-pen used in this research is a first draft. The study tested the factors affecting the successful use of the QLF-pen in a non-dental setting detecting (incipient) caries lesion(s). In addition, it is examined which factors have an impact on the presence of plaque and dental caries, which determine whether fluorescence can occur. In the research 58 children are involved. These children, aged up to 4 years are examined at both child health centers in the city of Groningen as in the province of Groningen. The examinations consisted of a questionnaire and an oral examination, only using the QLF-pen. At 10.3% of the children fluorescence of (incipient) caries lesion(s) was found, and at 5.2% fluorescence of plaque. The QLF-pen does not seem to function optimally. Only in a dark environment and on smooth surfaces of elements fluorescence occurs. The QLF-pen can properly be applied in a non-dental setting and could contribute to early identification of children with (incipient) caries lesion(s), so invasive intervention can be prevented and preventive action taken.
