Abstract

Objectives: Screening of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) has proved to be effective to reduce mortality from AAA rupture in men aged 65-79. We report the results of a screening program including all patients suspected of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) referred to the vascular surgeon. Methods: From january 2008 to december 2012 1956 patients were suspected of PAD and referred to a vascular surgeon in the Martini ziekenhuis in Groningen. Their duplex results and patient characteristics are collected in a database. Results: After exclusion 1697 (971 man and 726 woman) patients were successfully screened with duplex for AAA. The average age was 68 years. The prevalence of AAA was 7,0%. For man the prevalence was 9,9% and for woman 3,4%. The prevalence of AAA was 7,7% among patients with PAD and 4,8% among patients without PAD. Male sex, higher age and smoking had an independent positive influence on the variability and the prevalence of AAA in a multivariate analysis. Insulin use has got a significant protective influence on the development of AAA. Conclusion: The prevalence of AAA is higher among patients with suspected PAD. This is caused by a higher percentage of risk factors in this cohort. Screening of AAA should be considered in some patients within this population.
