Abstract
The main goal of the present study was to develop a simple methodology that would enable mapping of action capabilities of individual players during service receptions in volleyball. The setup included portable full-HD cameras and non-invasive markers to obtain high quality images of volleyball players and services to be able to track the position of the ball and volleyball players in 3D. The digitization process was primarily based on the use of high contrast images and the use of pixel change and succeeded in tracking the positions of the players and the ball trajectories with little manual intervention. The locations where the balls were passed in 3D allowed to calculate heat maps of the area which the individual participants covered during service receptions, reflecting the action capabilities of the players. Subsequently, properties of the area in which the services were received were calculated. The results presented illustrate how the methods allows for addressing questions regarding affordance based control in sport in general and the possibility to investigate service receptions in volleyball from an affordance based perspective in particular. The methodology developed offers possibilities to extend affordance research to other dynamic sport situations as well to get insight in the shaping of decisions in situations where multiple actions are afforded.
