Abstract

Background: Since the introduction of in vitro fertilization (IVF), more and more children are being born by these techniques, but the effect of IVF and the underlying subfertility on the development and health of these children are not fully known. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of IVF with or without ovarian stimulation on the risk in offspring for hospitalization, use of medical care and asthma during the first 4 years of life. Methods: Prospective cohort study consisting of 63 children born after controlled ovarian hyperstimulation-IVF (COH-IVF), 53 children born after modified natural cycle-IVF (MNC-IVF) and 79 children born after spontaneous conception of subfertile couples (Sub-NC). Questionnaires about the health of the child filled out by the parents at the various follow-up moments, including the age of 4 years, were used. Results: The incidence of hospitalization, various forms of medical care, asthma and asthma-related symptoms did not differ between the three groups, with the exception of a higher incidence of visits to the general practitioner in the COH-IVF group compared with the MNC-IVF group (adjusted odds ratio (OR): 7.36 (95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.19-45.63)). Time to pregnancy (used as a proxy for subfertility) also did not affect the risk of the above mentioned parameters except orchidopexy (adjusted OR= 1.43 (CI: 1:01 to 2:03); adjustment for breastfeeding, low birth weight and preterm birth). Conclusion: This study showed that the in vitro procedure and ovarian hyperstimulation in general do not increase the risk of hospitalization, use of medical care, asthma and asthma-related symptoms up until 4 years of age.
