Abstract

Objective. There is no validated questionnaire specifically focussing on patient satisfaction and quality of life of patients with cleft or rhinolalia aperta in the age of 0-20 years. The objective of the proces of development and validation of the questionnaire for children with an externally visible cleft in the age of 0-11 is to subdivide the questions in factors (construct validity), determine the internal consistency and reduce the number of questions. Design. A cross-sectional study was performed in the Medisch Centrum of Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. Parent(s)/caregiver(s) of children in the age of 0-11 years with an externally visible cleft were asked to complete a questionnaire of 68 questions. The composition of the questionnaire was preceded by interviews with experts, parents and a patient organisation. In this study, besides the development of four questionnaire, the steps of the validation process were described, this being question reduction (removal of an question when >50% of the respondents answered ‘Not applicable’), determining factors (for example standing for an cleft feature) and determination of the value of Cronbach’s alpha (>0,7). Results. 113 patients were invited to participate in this study of which so far 63 did return the questionnaire (55,8%). Based on the response the questionnaire was reduced with 13 questions. 44 of the remaining 49 questions were subdivided into 14 factors. 11 of the 14 factors showed a good value of Cronbach’s alpha (>0,7) ranging from 0,705 to 0,951. Conclusion. The shortened questionnaire now contains 49 questions and 11 of the 14 factors show good values of Cronbach’s alpha. For the remaning factors further analysis is necessary. The other three developed questionnaire will be analysed in the future. A very promising step is taken in the process of developping and validating a new questionnaire.
