Abstract

Background: Ethiopia is one of the countries with the highest number of maternal deaths. The availability and access to emergency obstetric care is essential for the prevention of maternal deaths. Training of healthcare providers (HCPs) can play an important role in improving quality of care and thereby reducing maternal mortality and morbidity. Objectives: To contribute to improving emergency obstetric care in Gondar Region, Ethiopia by evaluating the impact of the introduction of a postgraduate Life Saving Skills-Emergency Obstetric Care-Newborn Care (LSS-EmONC) training. The evaluation was focussed on reaction, knowledge, skills, and change in behavior in clinical practice of HCPs. In this way lessons learned from introducing a new competency based training program in emergency obstetric care can be derived. Methods: The descriptive study design with a before-after approach, using a mix of quantitative and qualitative data, was based on Kirkpatrick’s model for training evaluation. In addition a ‘lessons learned approach’ summarized facilitators’ perspectives. Results: HCPs reacted positively to the LSS-EMONC training with significant improvement in knowledge and skills after the training. Overall HCPs felt more confident in performing skills after being trained. Based on supervisory visits and facilitators experience we learned that local sustainability, participant commitment and local context are challenging factors in introducing a new training program. Conclusions: The LSS-EmONC training has the potential to improve skilled attendance at birth and improve quality of care, which are all vital to the reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity.
