Abstract

Introduction. The positive effects of abdominoplasty on satisfaction and quality of life have been reported in literature. However, in exchange for these satisfying results, the patient receives a large horizontal scar on the abdominal wall. So, the question remains if the satisfaction not only increases in social situations (e.g. when the patient is fully dressed), but also in intimate situations (e.g. when the patient is completely naked) when the scar is visible. Aim. To prospectively investigate above-mentioned issue, patient satisfaction after an abdominoplasty over a period of two years was evaluated by means of a questionnaire evaluating the several different situations including alone or with intimate partner, and while being fully dressed, in bathing suits, or completely naked. Patients and methods. For this study, 43 women with a mean age of 41 ± 9 years, mean body mass index of 24 ± 3 kg/m2 who underwent an abdominoplasty in the ZGT Hospital in Hengelo, supervised from the Cosmea Clinique for cosmetic surgery in Hengelo in the years between 2008 and 2010, were included. A questionnaire was developed in which participants rate questions on 5-point Likert scale (1=very unsatisfied to 5=very satisfied, and 1=completely disagree to 5=completely agree). The questionnaire was being conducted on four points in time: preoperative, three months postoperative, one year postoperative and two years postoperative. A Friedman’s 2-way ANOVA was used to investigate whether there was any significance at all. When there was, Wilcoxon’s matched-pair signed-rank (2 pairs) tests were performed. A P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. There was a significant reduction in feeling ashamed of the abdominal wall (P=0.000) and a significant increase in satisfaction about the general picture and the aspect of the abdominal wall in both social situations (i.e. wearing clothes), as well as in intimate situation (i.e. being naked) (P=0.000). However, being naked did not affect the outcome. After abdominoplasty women still felt more comfortable while being naked and with their intimate partner than before abdominoplasty. Interestingly, under intimate situations, they felt less comfortable with their abdominal wall and general appearance two years postoperatively as compared to one year postoperatively. (Naked alone: P=0,011. Naked with partner: P=0,008). Conclusion. This study has demonstrated that an abdominoplasty significantly improves patient satisfaction with regard to the appearance of the abdominal wall in both social situations (i.e. wearing clothes) and intimate situations (i.e. being naked): women who have undergone an abdominoplasty feel less ashamed of their abdominal wall after the surgery, and are more satisfied about the general picture of their abdominal wall.
