Abstract

Prosthetics restorations on implants consist of several parts that are in some way connected In the majority of cases, this is by means of a screw-nut type of connection. When screwing on different constructions on implants, ideally a torque wrench is used in order to apply the optimal torque. Nevertheless, biomechanical complications occur on a regular basis. This study focuses on the amount of wear of torque wrenches potential loss of accuracy. This is done by means of two sub-studies with separate hypotheses: 1. Despite frequent use, there is no loss of accuracy; 2. Despite frequent passes through a cleaning cycle, there will be no loss of accuracy. In both studies the population consisted of nine torque wrenches, three of each firm. In the first study torque forces were applied a 1000 times and after every hundredth torqueing cycle the true torque force is measured. This measurement is repeated another two times and the averages is considered as outcome value. In the second part of the study, torque wrenches were subjected to 150 thermal disinfection cycles, after which measurements were performed in a similar manner as described above after every twenty-fifth cycle. Results reveal that wear occurs both after frequent use as after frequent thermal desinfection. In the first sub-study there was a decrease of 6.6% for the Camlog toque wrench, a decrease of 4.7% for the Dyna Dental torque wrench and a decrease of 2.5% for the Thommen medical torque wrench. In the second sub-study an increase of 5,6% for the Camlog torque wrench, a decrease of 1.1% for the Dyna Dental torque wrench and an increase of 3.1% for Thommen Medical torque wrench were observed. Consequently, both hypotheses can be rejected. However, the differences with baseline measurement are small and presumably of little clinical significance.
