Abstract

As a student-dentist you come in contact with many patients. Some of them will be afraid of you. The goal of this research is to examine the ability of dentistry students to asses fear for the dentist in their patients at the Centrum voor Tandheelkunde en Mondzorgkunde in Groningen. Also the influence of being at the end of the study on fear assessment is tested. And the influence of ethnicity, type of treatment and comes the patient alone or together is tested. The research has been carried out under the students at the CTM. The instruments of fear measurement DAS, VAS-A and KATB are used to examine the correspondence between fear assessment from the student and the fear measurement of the patient. The response rate was low. Only 24,6% of the needed measurements were met. De acquired data were processed in SPSS where after the different variables were tested with the One-Sample T -test and also other tests. The tests showed no significant differences except when the patient did or did not come alone. Because of the low response rate any firm conclusions cannot be made. The students who were included in this research are able to asses fear correctly in their patients. What does attract attention is that when groups are bigger the test data become more significant. It points out that if there are enough measurements, a significant outcome could become noticeable. The most important conclusion of this research is the ability of the students to correctly asses the fear of their patients. Because of the low response rate this conclusion cannot be made for all students of the CTM. Furthermore it is recommended to use randomisation in further research. So the research group will become more representative.
