Abstract

A mandibular torus (TM) is a bony, benign exostosis on the innerside of the mandible. What causes this thickening is unknown, but there are indications in the literature that parafunctions of the mouth are associated with the occurrence of these tori. The idea is that the action of large forces on the bone during the oral parafunctions will create more bone. There is currently no clear scientific evidence that supports or rejects this idea. The purpose of this study was to assess whether an association between oral habits and the incidence of a tnandibular torus exists. In a case control study therefore 34 people with a mandibular torus are being tnatched for age and sex with a group of people without tori. Central detenninant is the difference in muscle tone between rest and maxitnal clenching measured by surface EMG (tn V). Conditional logistic regression analyses shows no difference between TM-patients and their matched controles regarding sEMG-values. There is no difference in oral habits in TM-patients and their matched controles. However the validity of the method of measurement is questionable.
