Abstract

The present study focused on the effects of pressure and fatigue on novice athletes performance and underlying behavior in a basketball free throw task. Ten undergraduate students were filmed while they performed 25 free throws under four conditions: low-pressure and low-fatigue (LPLF), low-pressure and high-fatigue (LPHF), high-pressure and lowfatigue (HPLF) and high-pressure and high-fatigue (HPHF). Performance and pre-shot behavior (consisting of pre-performance routines, gaze behavior and preparation times) were determined by analyzing the videos. The results showed that the performance and behavior were not affected by pressure or fatigue and that performance could not be predicted by behavior. The recommendation for future research is to focus on expert athletes in a laboratory setting. The results of the present study can be used as a basis to compare elite athletes with.
