Abstract

Study objective: To compare the effectiveness of two endometrial ablation methods, ThermaChoice III and NovaSure, for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). Study design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: Two hospitals in the eastern part of the Netherlands, Ziekenhuisgroep Twente (ZGT) in Almelo and Hengelo and Medische Spectrum Twente (MST) in Enschede. Patients: Patients treated with ThermaChoice III in the ZGT hospital and patients treated with NovaSure in the MST hospital. Methods: A total of 514 patients were included. The primary outcome measure was the patients satisfaction after the treatment, measured by the condition-specific Menorrhagia Multi-Attribute Scale (MMAS). The secondary outcome measure was the effectiveness of the treatment, measured by the amenorrhea rate and the hysterectomy rate. Results: The score on the condition-specific MMAS was high for both groups, without a significant difference between the groups (88.8 compared to 86.5, P=.183). The amenorrhea rate was significantly higher for the NovaSure group (45% compared to 27%, P=.001) with a significant difference on the survival analysis (P=.001). The hysterectomy rate was slightly higher for the ThermaChoice III group, without a significant difference between the groups (19% compared to 13%, P=.066) and on the survival analysis (P=.124). Conclusion: The patients satisfaction is equal for patients treated with ThermaChoice III endometrial ablation and NovaSure endometrial ablation. NovaSure endometrial ablation leads to a significant higher amenorrhea rate.
