Abstract

A new test to determine objective chewing ability has recently been developed in the University Medical Center Utrecht. Research shows that the test discriminates well between different types of people with different chewing ability, compared to previous tests. It has not yet been shown if the test itself is reliable. One aspect would be that consecutive tests show consistent results. Therefore a test-retest experiment was performed. A test that can be done by the patient without intervention of a professional would be very useful. That's why it has also been investigated if it is possible to make a test that is able to do so. A mastication test was performed among 20 persons. They received an instruction form and a tablet. Researchers weren't available for questions or help. The persons had to chew 20 times on a Plasticine-tablet. This tablet consists of two layers of colored clay (red and blue) which will be mixed a certain way after being chewed on 20 times. It was noted if the persons followed the steps on the instruction form. This was done a second time. Also an evaluation form was given to the persons. The chewed tablets were flattened and scanned, according to a previously described method (Speksnijder et al., 2009). The degree to which the two colors mixed Q.e. the mixing ability is a measure for the chewing efficiency. The results from the first test and the retest were examined. The mean value of the first test were higher than the mean value of the second tests, which suggests that the second time the tablet was better chewed. Mean differences between the mixing ability of the test and retest were 5,9°/o. This is significant (matched-pair test, t = 2,559, p = 0,019). It can be concluded that the results as obtained in this experiment are not consistent. In order to determine the reliability in a future study the following must be examined: interexaminar consistency and intra-examiner consistency. The test set-up and the test itself were clear to the patient and the test itself was easy to perform according to the persons. Not everyone chewed on the tablet for 20 times. Very little time was necessary to perform the test. .
