Abstract

Objectives: Previous research shows that the accumulation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) accelerates the functional decline of multiple systems, thereby contributing to the aging of humans. Recently, evidence has emerged that AGEs are associated with the severity of retinal detachment. The validated marker of AGE accumulation in tissue (skin auto fluorescence (AF)) is used to determine which patient characteristics contribute to AGE accumulation in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. We therefore tested the hypothesis that a number of patient variables will make a significant contribution to the explanation of variance in skin auto fluorescence. Methods: Skin AF values were determined with the aid of the AGE reader for 410 patients who visited the UMCG with a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Clinical and lifestyle variables were collected during their stay in the UMCG. Regression analyses were used to investigate which patient variables contribute significantly to the explanation of variance in skin AF in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Finally, there was a prediction model for skin AF established for this patient population. Results: The average age in the patient population was 61 +/- 10 years and the patient population consisted of 281 men and 129 women, respectively 68.5% en 31.5% of the total patient population. The average skin AF in the patient population was 2.36 ± 0.53 AU. The patient variables in the multivariable analysis for the prediction of skin AF which contributed the most were: age, gender, CRP, smoking, pack years and insulin medication ( P < 0.05). The final prediction model explained 28.5 % of the variance in skin AF. Conclusion: Our results showed that age, gender, CRP, smoking, pack years and insulin medication independently contributed to the explanation of variance in skin AF in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
