Abstract

Aim of this study was to investigate the discriminant validity of theM-ABC 2's cut-off scores. This was done by evaluating the differences on: motor development, intelligence, physical fitness and co morbidity; between children who, based on the M-ABC 2, were classified as DCD, at risk for DCD or without movement problems (control group). Seventyone children from 6.6-10.5 years participated, who all attended a school for special primary education. Significantly different scores were obtained between the groups for parental rating of motor coordination during daily living; with the worst score for the children with DCD and the best score for the control children. With regard to quality of gross motor control only the control group obtained a significantly better score than the DCD group. The level of physical fitness was significantly higher for the control group on the variables 'coordination' and 'endurance activities' compared to both DCD groups. The results of this study do not fully support the discriminant validity of theM-ABC 2 as an instrument which can be used to classify children with DCD or at risk of DCD.
