Abstract

Dutch pregnant women know a relative unhealthy lifestyle with respect to pregnant women in many other European countries. Smoking is an important part of it. Smoking is, both actively and passively by the expectant mother, a risk for the unborn child. Our goal is to improve the assistance for quitting smoking for pregnant women in the Tjongerschans. By doing a focus group with midwives, a focus group with pregnant woman who stopped smoking and semi-structured individual interviews with pregnant woman who smoke, we aim to understand the current state of care and the needs of pregnant women for this help. We are also interested in the relationship and interaction between the midwife and the pregnant woman who smokes. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed using qualitative data analysis software. The assistance process with possible interventions has become clear to us after this research. Motivation is the key to success. If the pregnant women is not motivated, it should be created. The V-MIS training is aimed at this and therefore necessary for the counselor. Without motivation the pregnant women can not be referred for help. The study shows that there is no support for a digital concept. There is a need for assistance in the form of contact with peers and group sessions. We have noticed that both pregnant women who smoke and who have stopped have limited knowledge about the dangers of smoking during pregnancy. A short information film is suggested as a means of increasing knowledge. Finally the study shows, against our expectations, that both midwives and pregnant women experience no adverse effects from the smoking on their treatment relationship. The V-MIS training will be introduced in the second line shortly. In addition, there will be two assistants offering help to women who are willing to stop smoking. Depending on the demand and supply this will take place individually or in a group. In addition, an information film about the long and short term effects will be produced.
