Abstract

Background Various studies have shown that oral health care for dependent elderly is inadequate. These elderly often reside in a nursing home, but this might also be true for homebound elderly. In the Netherlands almost four hundred thousand elderly are still living at home. They depend on informal care and homecare. Oral health care doesn't always have the highest priority. Aim Gaining insight into the role of caregivers in a homecare organization in supporting the dental care of dependent elderly living at home. Various factors that could be of any influence were included. Methods This survey used questionnaires. These were sent to two homecare organizations in the Province of Groningen. Twenty-eight homecare workers participated in this study. Results The majority of the caregivers assisted the elderly in brushing teeth and cleaning dentures. Many caregivers indicated the facilitation of dental self-care as an integral part in the care of clients. The policy of the homecare organization and the homecare organization itself affected the assistance of homecare workers. There was not much consultation between different disciplines (clients, colleagues, informal care and dentist/dental hygienist). Conclusion Caregivers provided assistance especially to dental self-care. Consultation between different disciplines definitely needs improvement.
