Abstract

Every year circa 40 patients with dento-alveolar injury are treated in the emergency department of the UMCG. The residents of the department of oral surgery of the UMCG are feeling that at least half of these patients could have treated by a dentist. Purpose; The goal of this research is to identify which part of the patients with dento-alveolar injury could have been handled by a serving dentist and which factors influence have on the fact that patients still need to be treated on the emergency room (ER) of the UMCG. Method; This research is a retrospective cross-sectional study. The digital patient records of the past 5 years are consulted and several data are systematically recorded in an Excel file. The variables on the severity of the injury, and additional dental injury were recorded, after which the patients were distributed through a decision tree in a group that could only be treated in the hospital and a group that also could be treated by the attending dentist. These data are processed in the program Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). A logistic regression analysis was applied for analyzing the data Results; Of all the 218 patients included, according to this study, there were 147 (68%) rightly treated in the emergency room. Patients who have referred themselves to the ER have more chance that a dentist could treat the dento-alveolar injury. The same applies to the younger population in the study. More men than women were treated for dental injury. Conclusion; The feeling of the residents that at least half of the patients with dental injuries on the ER could have treated by the attending dentist is unjustified. The patient population that presents the ER of the UMCG often have additional injury which justifies that they are treated in ER. For 31.9% of the patient population is that a dentist could have treated them. This group consists mainly out of young people and self-referrals.
