Abstract

Preface: Caries is a multifactorial disease which has many aspects en causes. This disease is characterized for demineralization and remineralization of dental hard tissues. There are many determinants that have a harmful effect on the degradation of tooth tissue, fluoride may ensure that this process can stop and that tissue can remineralize again. An important indicator of oral health is the prevalence of caries in which the diet of the 21st century plays on important role. In comparison to the rest of the world, the prevalence of caries in the Netherlands is low. Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate the dental health of people, expressed in DMFT/FMT, from people who are 17-19 years and 27-29 years in 2004 and 2014, and which are treated by students at the CTM in Groningen. Methods: Due the patient data, which is available from the program Vistadent and is used by students and staff, there is data recorded that is important to gain insight in the dental situation of those people. The number of missing, restored, and carious elements are noted. Frequencies of dental visits and when the last restoration is made are determined and the treatments which are done by students are also examined in this study. Results: This study has shown that there is a statistically significant difference in oral health in DMFT/FMT among 17-19 year olds in 2004 compared to 27-29 year olds in 2014 and among 17-19 year olds in 2014 compared to 27-29 year olds in 2014. There was no statistically significant difference found between the 17-19 year olds in 2004 compared to 2014. For both of the 17-19 year old groups the percentage of dental hygiene visits and/or instructions are 67% en 77%, in the age group 27-29 in 2014 this percentage is 92%. This study also showed that the first and second molars are the most treated tooth. Conclusion: In this study it can be concluded that in ten years the oral health expressed in DMFT/FMT-values rise steadily higher. This is mostly due to the higher scores in restorations. There is no difference in both of the 17-19 year old groups in 2004 en 2014.
