Abstract
Background: Main purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of an aerobic intervention and the used measurement methods in persons with Down's syndrome (DS) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Seconday purpose is to examine the influence of the intervention on the rest-actvity rhythm and physical fitness of persons with DS and AD. Methods: Fifteen participants were included in this study, 14 executed the pretest and 9 executed the posttest. Intervention consist of 10 weeks, 3 times a week, 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at 60% of the estimated maximal heart rate. Pre- and posttest consists of 1 week of actigraphy and measurements of endurance, body composition, muscular strength, coordination and reaction time. Results: The feasibilty of the intervention was 75%, with an adherence of the participants of 98% and 11% organizational constraints. Feasibility of the actigraphy measurement was 75% and of the physical fitness tests averagely 78%. Only statistical effect of the intervention was a decreased percentage of body fat (Z=-2.2). Conclusion: The feasibility of the aerobic intervention and the measurement methods in this study was low. Adherence of the participants was high, suggesting that the structure of the intervention was realistic for this population. Measurement methods need adjustments to improve the feasibility.
