Abstract

The oral health of mentally retarded persons ask for a collective approach. Help of parents and/or attendants is necessary. In this study I want to examine if there is a difference in oral health between people who live with their parents, those who live in a home with guiding or who live on their own. The study has been carried out on 39 people at their own homes, using a questionnaire and the results have been collected The results give an rough impression of the oral situation, because the groups were not equal in size, the circumstances varied and were only carried out once per person. A longer study would have improve the results if participants could be questioned more than once. There seems to be a difference between the three groups. The dental plaque was the lowest in the people who live with their parents, these results were influenced by different factors. An other conclusion is that the dentist and oral hygienist has to give parents and attendants more information and instructions about oral hygiene with regard to their child/client. Their knowledge about this issue is too small.
