Abstract

Background: Assuming that better patient satisfaction will increase the number of inpatients of a hospital, this study examines the impact increasing patient numbers resulting from the rising birth rate have had in the past and might have in the future on patient satisfaction with the obstetrical service of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Sana Hospital Hameln-Pyrmont. Method: The author developed a questionnaire considering the special characteristics of an obstetrical service; during the study period of six weeks a total of 122 patients were surveyed for their general satisfaction while being inpatients of the obstetrical service at Sana Hospital Hameln-Pyrmont. Results: To date, the rising birth rate (i.e., rising patient numbers) with its corresponding rise in workload of the midwives, as well as medical and nursing staff, has not yet negatively affected general inpatient satisfaction. Conclusions: Despite a (still) rather high rate of recommendation and a positive overall impression, there are definite starting points (e.g., the discharge/information management) which could further improve general patient satisfaction with the obstetrical service at Sana Hospital Hameln-Pyrmont. As part of a successful quality management system it is also recommended to perform such patient surveys regularly to identify, discuss and successfully implement potential future improvements early in everyday clinical practice. This way, the obstetrical service in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Sana Hospital Hameln-Pyrmont will continue to be successful in the future competition for satisfied patients.
