Abstract

Objective. Endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) is therapy of choice for pathology of paranasal sinuses and anterior skull base. A valid disease-specific instrument is needed for the complete assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) following EES for benign pathology. Therefore, the Groninger Endoscopic Endonasal Questionnaire (GEES-Q) was created. The goal of this study was to test the psychometric characteristics of the GEES-Q in an interim analysis. Methods. In this prospective study, the 72-item version of the GEES-Q was completed preoperatively and 2 weeks postoperatively by patients undergoing EES of the paranasal sinuses and/or anterior skull base for benign pathology. Content validity was secured because the instrument was assembled with items that were brought forward by patient interviews, literature research and expert opinions. To test structural validity, exploratory factor analyses (EFA) were used. EFA were conducted using principal axis factoring. Variance accounted for and factor loadings presented were from the Varimax rotation model. Internal consistency of the GEES-Q was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha. Results. A total of 98 patients completed both pre- and postoperative questionnaires. EFA yielded a 3 factor solution, representing the 3 domains of HRQoL: a physical, emotional and social domain. Based on EFA and Cronbach’s alpha, 17 items were eliminated from the instrument leading to the preliminary 55-item of the GEES-Q. Cronbach’s alpha for each domain was excellent (respectively 0.893, 0.955, 0.976). Conclusion. This interim analysis showed that the 55-item of the GEES-Q comprises items relevant for patients undergoing EES. Content validity, structural validity and internal consistency of the GEES-Q was demonstrated. This study provides the basis for further extensive psychometric testing with a larger sample size.
