Abstract

The aim of the current study was to examine how empathy and emotional contagion are related to team performance in volleyball. Interpersonal processes like the comtnunication of positive emotions among team members are expected to positively influence performance; empathy and emotional contagion are thought to facilitate this process. The study was divided into three overlapping parts, which were ultimately brought together. In Study 1 we measured empathy and emotional contagion of 13 male players of the Dutch national volleyball team using selfmeasurement questionnaires. Study 2 measured to what extent empathy and emotional contagion were expressed during a volleyball match, by combining the results of the questionnaires with behavioral observation of emotional behavior. In Study 3 the expressed behaviors during volleyball matches were linked to volleyball performance. ( 1) Results showed that national level volleyball players contained an average level of empathy and etnotional contagion compared to a standard population. (2) The scores on the questionnaires showed a relation to some of the expressed emotional behaviors we observed, meaning that empathy and emotional contagion seemed to be expressed more in players with higher scores on the questionnaires. (3) Finally, we found that some emotional behavior which occurred between two points in a volleyball match was related to the performance outcome of the previously played point and the next point in the match. Overall our findings provided a limited support for the hypothesis that empathy and emotional contagion are related to emotion expression and performance outcomes.
